Tech 4 Good – Social Income
Social Income offers a radically simple solution in the fight against poverty: by transforming 1% of peoples’ salaries into an unconditional basic income for individuals in the Global South, wealth is redistributed to where it is most urgently needed. The monthly installments to recipients are guaranteed for 3 years and transferred directly onto their phones, in a way that is radically transparent, cost-efficient (we can pay out 100% of individual donations) and highly scalable. Our approach is also backed by science: countless studies have shown anticipatory cash transfers to be an effective anti-poverty tool. We paid out over 1000 Social Incomes in the last 2 years – much more to come.
Our technology is build by volunteers from Google, Apple and other great tech companies. Now we need more coding skills and ask you to join forces.
Our objective is:
- Build a customized impact measurment tool that runs regular surveys with the recipients (currently we use a third party tool called Typeform, it should be highly mobile friendly)
- Get the survey out on different channels depending on recipients possiblity (i.e. online, email, whatsapp, call using the API of the Twilio Customer Engagement Platform)
- Structuring all data from the surveys (using Firebase as a DB)
- Visualize these data in real time on a webpage for actual and potentional donors (as we already do with our finances on our transparency page)
As part of the Google Non-Profit program, Social Income's platform builds up on Firebase and Google Cloud Functions. The admin tool runs on React and the website uses Bootstrap, Handlebars and VueJS. Payments are routed through a Swiss bank account to Sierra Leone then paid out in batches on the Orange Money platform.
There are other options to work with us, especially in the area of IT-security of sensible data, mobile app development and digital fundraising tools – if this is more your cup of tea, just get in touch with us: dev@socialincome.org
Getting the project off the ground, structure the data, visualizing in the results.
- Project management in Github
- Adobe programs (if needed)
- Kick off meeting with founder
- Weekly project managements calls
- Optional weekly team meetings & beers (Tuesday nights in Zurich) with other developers from the tech scene (Google, Apple, ETH etc.)
- Dedicated project coordinator (former CS employee)
- Option for future participation in a field trip to Sierra Leone with the organisation
Milestones
Structure Data for Impact Measurement
Improving on the existing data structure provided by the third party tool. Implementing the new data structure in our Firestore DB
Building Web Survey
This happens in the frontend. Individual links for each recipient. The provided form should be data light, as most people in Sierra Leone have not much data on their phones.
Adding New Channels
How can the basic survey also be used on other channels, i.e. if person doesn't have regular internet connection but Whatsapp or preferes a call. For this we use the Twilio API. This step can also be additional if it gets too complex or limited to one additional channel.
Visualize Data from the Surveys
The answers of the recipients should be shown in real time on the website. Similar to our financial transparency, it should update automatically with every new survey filled out. The data will be visualized on a separate page on our website.
