Localized social support resource guides for adult learners
Generation USA learners face a range of barriers to success in education and employment. Generation provides training and wraparound support to help them overcome these barriers and launch life-changing careers. One of the ways we offer support to help learners overcome barriers to success is through a student resource hub (https://usa.generation.org/student-hub/). This project will provide a list of vetted local resources to help learners understand and access support in their communities for two of the most common barriers they experience: food insecurity and mental health challenges.
This is a project that can be completed by several volunteers. We hope to have volunteers complete resource guides for any/all of our priority cities where they live or have strong experience in:
- Dallas, TX
- New York City, NY
- Washington, DC
- Miami, FL
- Atlanta, GA
- Denver, CO
- Seattle, WA
- Houston, TX
- St. Louis, MO
- Chicago, IL
The deliverables for this project will be two local resource guides (one addressing food insecurity, the other addressing mental health challenges) that contain:
1) Compilation of 2-5 most valuable local resources (organizations offering services, local cost assistance programs, etc) to address the issue (food insecurity or mental health challenges)
2) Short writeup with tips for how to access these resources in the community. This could include information on things like public transit access, best times of day to visit, specific residency requirements, or other information you think would help learners who need to utilize the resources.

Milestones
Get familiar with the context
Learn about Generation USA and the learners we serve, and explore resources in the community you are writing a guide for to get a general sense of what social support resources are available to residents.
Compile and research social support resources in the community
Compile potential resources for the guide and research them. Read the websites, call or visit the office, or take other actions needed to understand what each resource provides to beneficiaries, the quality of the resource, and what is required to access it.
Create a resource guide
Select the most valuable resources for the guide and write a brief summary of tips and information learners would need to know to effectively access the resources listed in the guide.

Mission
Mission: Generation USA transforms education to employment systems to prepare, place, and support people into life-changing careers that would otherwise be inaccessible.
Vision: The COVID-19 pandemic has destroyed livelihoods at unprecedented scale in the U.S. Furthermore, a parallel pandemic of racial inequity has caused the impact to be felt most by Black, Latinx, and female workers. Generation USA is uniquely positioned to address this enormous need with speed and scale.
Purpose: Generation USA exists to provide Black people, Latinx people, women and other marginalized people groups opportunities to improve their quality of life by equipping them with the training and holistic support that will empower them to obtain a transformative and sustainable career opportunity.
We create impact through supporting unemployed and underemployed individuals, with an emphasis on Black/Latinx/Female individuals, with lifelong skill training and job matching to propel them into sustainable careers. We aim to promote systems change and transform the post-secondary education landscape by working to make the community college system more responsive to changing economic landscape and learner’s needs. We are enhancing credential-based learning with community colleges across the country and tying those credentials to job placement, by partnering with employers to meet demand.
