About City Year UK
Below is an overview of the projects we are supporting on the platform, their status as well status updates for projects that have been funded
City Year UK is a youth social action charity that empowers young people to tackle educational disadvantage. Volunteering full-time in primary and secondary schools for a year, young people (aged 18-25) act as coaches and mentors to support student learning, whether through in-class support, supporting their emotional wellbeing and skills development, or boosting their aspirations.
We also train up and develop our volunteers to boost their skills, employability, and readiness to lead future change.
City Year UK is based in schools across London, Manchester, Birmingham, Coventry and The Black Country.
City Year UK's mission is to tackle educational disadvantage across the UK. Pupils often fall behind due to a number of factors- poverty, lack of access to resources, lack of aspiration- and City Year UK is there to make sure that they can catch up and achieve their potential.
We believe in the 'double benefit' of our programme- boosting the confidence, attainment and life skills of the pupils in our partner schools, and boosting the employability and skills of our volunteers, to make them into future leaders of change.
City Year was founded in the US in 1988 as a national service programme to unite young adults from diverse backgrounds for a demanding year of full-time civilian service. It has since grown to 29 US cities. In 2005, Nelson Mandela invited City Year to Johannesburg leading to City Year South Africa, the first international affiliate. The UK launch followed five years later, and has since expanded from its roots in London to Manchester and the West Midlands.
Credit Suisse was a critical partner in this history, and was instrumental in supporting City Year's launch in the UK. Credit Suisse is now a National Strategic Partner for City Year UK, helping to guide and shape our impact nationally and globally.
