Our Values

Founded in 1984, Habitat NYC’s mission is to transform lives and communities by building and preserving affordable homes with families in need, and by uniting all New Yorkers around the cause of affordable housing. Over our 35-year history we have served more than 1,200 families. Thanks to a combination of innovative new programming and scaling our successes, we are on track to serve 2,021 families by 2021.

Habitat NYC works to ensure that low-income families have the opportunity to benefit from the stability and equity of home ownership. The scale of NYC’s housing crisis cannot be overstated: over 64,000 New Yorkers sleep in shelters nightly. Over 350,000 families are on waiting lists for NYCHA and Section 8 housing, outnumbering the 260,000 families currently being served by those programs. Forty-six percent of New York City renters are rent burdened. For prospective homebuyers, home prices in New York City have more than doubled since 1990, with median household income falling about 11% over the same time period.
