Our Values

The University Children’s Hospital Zurich is one of the leading clinics for paediatric and youth medicine in Europe. As Switzerland’s biggest children’s university hospital, we cover the whole spectrum of paediatrics and child surgery: from new-born babies to fully-grown teenagers, and treatments for conditions ranging from broken bones to rare genetic metabolic diseases. For more than 150 years, we have been endeavouring to provide children and their families with the best possible treatment and care – regardless of gender, religion or social background.

The Children’s Hospital Zurich treats around 100,000 patients every year, carries out 6,000 operations, and treats more than 40,000 emergency cases. 30% of our patients are from other cantons or from abroad.

As a foundation under private law and supporter of the Children’s Hospital, we have been able to count on the public’s help for “their” Children’s Hospital, or “Kispi” as it is known among the locals, for over 150 years.

Unsere Mission (to be translated)

Commitment from the community is part of our tradition and identity – for example, it was a gift in 1868 that laid the foundation for the Eleonorenstiftung and for the Children’s Hospital which continues to be privately-run to this day. In honour of his wife Maria Eleonora, who died before her time, the doctor Conrad Cramer bequeathed to the City of Zurich the then substantial sum of 50,000 francs for the founding of a children’s hospital.

Since then, the Children’s Hospital Zurich has developed into the leading centre for paediatric and youth medicine in Switzerland with a reputation that extends far beyond the country’s borders. Every year our specialists treat around 100,000 young patients and, thanks to our own research department, perform pioneering work in paediatrics. The interdisciplinary cooperation goes far beyond the treatment team of the medical, nursing and physiotherapy staff: social counselling, psychological support, pastoral care, palliative care, the hospital school and hospital clowns, art therapy and sibling care are integral parts of the comprehensive support of our patients and their families.
